How to auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM

Set a trigger keyword once and Comment → Instagram DM automatically sends a personalized direct message to anyone who comments it on your posts — running on the official Meta Marketing API through your own connected Instagram account, replying in seconds instead of hours.

What you need

  • An Instagram Business or Creator account
  • Apiway account

Steps

  1. Open Comment → Instagram DM

Sign in to Apiway and open the Comment → Instagram DM app from the Apps catalog or your workspace.

    Open in Apiway

  2. Connect your Instagram account

Authorize your Instagram Business or Creator account through the official Meta login. Apiway acts on your own account through the sanctioned Marketing API, not a scraper.

  3. Pick a trigger keyword

Choose the word or phrase that should trigger a reply — for example "price" or "link" — matching how your audience actually comments.

  4. Write the DM reply

Write the message that gets sent automatically when the keyword matches. Keep it short and specific — a link, a price, or a next step.

  5. Turn it on

Save the rule. From here on, any comment matching the keyword on your posts triggers the DM automatically, within seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Picking a keyword that's too common

A keyword like "the" or "nice" will match far more comments than intended. Pick a keyword specific to genuine buying intent — a product name, "price", or "link".

  • Expecting it to reply to DMs, not just comments

This automation triggers off comments on your posts, not incoming DMs. Direct message replies are a separate flow — check the app's settings for whether that's covered for your account.

Troubleshooting

  • The keyword matches but no DM is sent — why?

Instagram's own messaging policies restrict DMs to accounts that haven't previously blocked messages from businesses, and rate limits can briefly delay sends during high comment volume. Confirm the automation is still marked active and the connected account hasn't hit a temporary platform limit.

  • Could this get my Instagram account restricted?

The automation runs through Instagram's own official Marketing API using your connected account's sanctioned permissions — it does not scrape pages or spoof requests, which is the pattern that gets accounts flagged.
