Remote vs office

Remote
VS
Office

Hello guys. I own a small company and during the pandemic, we all worked remotely. It seems more convenient for employees, but I’m not sure about the work efficiency. So I really can’t decide, whether I should continue remote or go back to the office. Can you give me the pros and cons of these things?

Positive argument for “Remote”

You can hire people from all over the world

11

Before the pandemic, it was difficult for companies based in America to reach talent located in Europe or Asia. So HR and business owners had to spend a lot of resources to find talent that was close to them in the same city. The search for employees was essentially limited to one city, where the company's headquarters was located. Now, the whole world is moving to remote, it’s possible to hire very qualified people from all over the world without regard to their location. This has given many really talented people a chance to prove themselves and get high-paying jobs at major global companies

Save on office and employee salaries

7

With the advent of remote work in our lives, employers became able to significantly reduce their costs of maintaining office and employee workplaces. Previously, in America, employers had to pay employees a salary that matched their skill level and met legal requirements. Now, an employer can hire an Eastern European specialist with the same level of skills required and still pay such an employee 2 to 3 times less than a similar employee from America. This policy concerning the salaries of employees from other countries applies mainly to programmers, designers, and other specialists who have previously proven themselves in freelancing

Positive argument for “Remote”

Comfort and more free time for the employee

8

By moving the workplace to home, employees no longer have to spend time commuting to the office. They can organize their workplace at home as they see fit and convenient. Remote gives employees the opportunity to do their work in a familiar and comfortable environment, in familiar clothing, without a dress code or thoughts about appearance. The time saved in this way can be spent on extra hours of rest, sleep, socializing with family, and hobbies

Negative argument for “Remote”

It's harder to control your employees

6

From the manager's point of view, with the transfer of work to a remote location, it has become unclear how to determine what employees are doing during their working hours. Previously, when you came to the office, you could clearly see what employees were doing, what tasks were they focused on at the moment, but now it isn’t clear whether an employee is working or doing nothing half a day. Some especially cunning specialists when working from home just pretend to work, but do their own things. When working in the office, such moments are immediately striking to the eye and are stopped by the supervisor

Negative argument for “Remote”

Lack of live communication

8

Spending time in the home environment makes many employees feel bored. In the office, there is lively interaction with colleagues, lunchtime gatherings, and collaborative activities. Those who work remotely are often deprived of all this. Being in such a vacuum isn’t easy for everybody, some people can hardly bear such restrictions and try to brighten up such loneliness with the help of Zoom, Skype, and other tools

Security

9

While bringing up data security issues, it should be noticed that such points aren’t that critical for freelancers and small companies when working remotely. In contrast, data security is a big issue for large corporations. All of the working information of specialists in such companies is located on the computers of the employees themselves. In this case, there’s a danger that the employee will move around with important data everywhere, increasing the likelihood of losing the computer, getting infected with malware, stealing it, or passing personal information to third parties. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to control this process, which makes the issue of data security and privacy a truly dangerous and unstable one

Communication

10

Humans are social creatures who simply need to communicate and interact with others. Each employee spends a certain amount of time at work talking with colleagues, for example during lunch or a break. To maintain normal performance, this is simply necessary. Such interactions allow employees to reduce stress, distract from the bustle of work, share their problems and find support from colleagues, ask for their help in solving difficult problems. An additional bonus of such communication is the natural desire of man to show his best side, to give his appearance increased attention with clothes, makeup, hair. Working remotely, it is unlikely that an employee will pay so much attention to his or her appearance. In a home environment, there’s no need for this kind of attention

Positive argument for “Office”

Office hours and breaks

9

If you work in an office, you can always be sure that your workday won't drag on until the evening and you won't have to take a taxi home. A normalized working day allows you to plan your free time, which you can spend with your family, friends, and favorite activities. The employee knows in advance that his weekends will be free and he can do whatever he wants. Meals and breaks are regulated, the employee always knows that at a certain time he can take a break from work tasks: to eat, do his own things or get some fresh air

Negative argument for “Office”

Waste of time and money on commuting

8

One of the strongest arguments against working in an office is the cost of energy, time, and money to get to work. Most employees spend 30 minutes or more to get to the office by the start of the workday. Some are even less fortunate and their commute can take several hours! Depending on how far away the office is, the cost of getting to work can be very high. Getting to work in crowded public transport also takes a huge amount of energy. And after the workday, there is even less energy and time to do their personal things devoted to hobbies and family

Negative argument for “Office”

Distractions

7

It’s a fact that people cannot do without communication with other people, but some office workers understand this need too literally. Their endless chatter, loud behavior, and other noise often distract others from their work tasks. When executing important orders from the manager, the employee simply needs to concentrate to do their job properly, but the animated conversations of colleagues become agony and an additional source of stress. It’s common for there to be disagreements in the team about open windows, air conditioners, or listening to music without headphones. It is a common case when one blows from an open window, while the other needs to turn on the air conditioner. In this case, it is impossible to come to a solution that satisfies both sides
